2023 Frase Five Recap

2023 was significantly marked by the ebb and flow of life. Full of waiting and fulfillment. The feelings of being stuck and gathering momentum. Full of restlessness and being satisfied. Full of growth and reorienting ourselves. Full of disorientation and finding our way again, and again, and again as we continue to follow Christ. This year has really highlighted a yearning in our hearts as we have found ourselves in an extended period of waiting. But not just any waiting. An active waiting. A holy waiting. Another year of our sojourning.

We have been in Pennsylvania for 3 years now. It has not been easy, but that also does not mean that it has been bad. We are still here and continuing to move forward, while we put down roots and invest in the place and people where we are. So what did this year look like for us?

Scott and Rach traveled to Scotland in April, fulfilling a dream that we have both had to visit such a beautiful country and equally lovely people.

Emma finally received a neuropsychological evaluation (which we have been working to obtain for years). This resulted in a diagnosis of Level 1 Autism. Because she has this official diagnosis, it helps us obtain specialized services to help her navigate her world. Emma also became a Safety Patrol Officer at her school, performed at her 2nd piano recital, and auditioned and was selected for a part in her school’s upcoming musical. We are so proud of her and have seen incredible growth and courage as she not only is a strong advocate for herself, but others also.

Wesley has become a voracious reader. Although he is in 2nd grade, he is at a 4th grade reading level. He is tenacious, loyal, and fiercely committed to people and what is right. Anyone who has Wesley in their life becomes a better person for it.  He continues to build Legos, learn about and explore the outdoors, ride his bike and play basket ball.

Declan is thriving in his last year of pre-K. He just turned five and not only has he learned his colors in Spanish, but can also sign them. He is inquisitive and loves telling stories and like his hero Spider-Man can always be found jumping and climbing and swinging. He keeps us on our toes and smiling with the way he sees the world.

Rach continues to work with a variety of clients through her LLC, Tritonia Consulting. She has successfully served clients in the non-profit world, the podcast industry, and the marketplace. She regularly demonstrates her commitment to to help people and organizations thrive through project management, copywriting and the assessment, development, and implementation of strategies and systems.

Scott has shifted from his role as a stay-at-home dad to securing a new position as a production associate at a powder coating company. While this job may not align with his long-term dreams, it fulfills a practical requirement for our family at this time for which we are grateful. He remains dedicated to serving the local church through teaching and writing, aspiring to persist in this meaningful work.

Throughout this past year, we've experienced a whirlwind of activity and introspection. It's been a year of living in the tension between waiting and fulfillment, restlessness and contentment. As a family, we've encountered growth, moments of uncertainty, and repeatedly found our footing through our faith in Christ. It is our prayer that wherever you find yourself in your sojourn, that you would know the beauty of Christ in this season, and that you would find strength, hope, comfort and peace as you continue on your journey.

We deeply value the partnership we share with you, navigating both the uncertainties and certainties of life together. Your continued support and investment in our lives mean a great deal to us. Thank you for being a part of our journey.

Merry Christmas from The Frase Family

To those of you who are in a season of joy and refreshment, may this season anchor you more deeply in God's love and compassion. For those of you who feel the heaviness of this world, may His tender love console, comfort, and come up to meet you. May this season be a reminder of His tangible presence made manifest to us. The Frase Family is honored to walk alongside you.

EMMA (4th Grade)

Emma lives each day with a wholeness of herself that makes us as her parents beyond proud. She is navigating a new diagnosis of autism and anxiety that is allowing us to help support her more fully. We would love to share more with you about what this means if you are interested.

Wesley Image

Wesley (1st Grade)

Wesley did an incredible job this fall in his Rookie Baseball league. He is an avid reader and is thriving in school. His favorite thing to do is play outside with his friend from school. He turns 7 this December and we can't believe that we get the honor of investing in this incredible kids life.

Declan aka Duck (Preschool)

Duck started preschool in October and he adores his teachers. He gets to go with one of his favorite friends adding to this great experience. This has also meant we have battled new germs and being sick this Fall but we are so grateful that he is thriving! He is also still obsessed with all things Spiderman!

Scott and Rachael

It has been a season of Micro Shifts in the Frase house. We have continued to teach in the local church and non-profit sector and are so honored to walk with these ministries. Rachael continues to move forward in her seminary degree and Scott continues to write devotional content for our followers. We share more about the ministry we are involved in on our website and how you can invest financially and in prayer.

Movement

No, we are not moving again, at least we have no current plans to move. For so long there were many major transitions in our life such as moving, job transitions, and ministry redirection. It left us feeling like we were in this circular trajectory with no movement forward, we have just been spinning.

It would be a big fat lie to say that each day feels like progress but as time passes, we are starting to see how micro-shifts in our life have created forward momentum and what once felt like a circular motion now feels like progress.

Micro Shift ONE, Home

Scott has spent the last year making the macro adjustment of investing full time in our kids’ lives and unpacking a challenging season of loss while learning how to hold hope and loss simultaneously. Scott has intentionally invested into his mental, emotional, and spiritual health that has served our whole family. This intentionality has moved us all forward as a family seeing that sometimes we need permission and room to process life.

Intentionality

Time is the best gift we can give one another.

Micro Shift TWO, Kids

We knew heading into this summer that we were trying to be good stewards as we made up for the season of transition and unemployment. We chose to spend this season investing in counseling, our health, and other areas that would give us growth as people. However, we also knew we wanted this to be an intentional time with our kids. So, we choose to do at least one intentional activity each week. Here are some of the memories that we made this summer.

Mini golf, visiting family, floating down the river, watching Elf at the Drive In, Kids Science Museum, Lego Discovery in Philly, SkyZone, Overnight Beach trip in Virginia, movie nights at home and at the theater, local pool, library, playground, the fair, play dates with friends, local arcades, soccer camp, animal camp, Lego camp, church camp, bowling, time with cousins, ice cream dates, dinner parties, two upcoming weddings, and hopefully one last camping trip.

There was nothing BIG, however all of these small moments have made an incredibly full and memorable summer.

 Micro Shift THREE, Ministry

Not having an official role in ministry at times felt a bit, well unofficial. There were moments in this last year that direction felt murky at best. But looking back here are some areas that we were able to continue to serve consistently in over the past year.

Scott wrote Thursday Thoughts every week sharing and encouraging others in the dialogue and outworking of Christianity.

Scott and I were also both honored to be guest preachers at our friend’s church, St. James Presbyterian in Mechanicsburg, PA. Scott was able to preach on the story of Rahab from the book of Joshua, and I (Rachael) preached on the Parable of the Sower from Luke’s gospel.

I (Rachael) had the opportunity to speak this spring in Sandown, New Hampshire at Mastering Motherhood. I was able to share about the story of Naomi from the book of Ruth.

Scott is officiating his cousin’s wedding over Labor Day weekend in upstate New York and we are thrilled to celebrate Sophia and Nate. Emma is particularly excited about celebrating love!

Scott will also be preaching at Church of the Nations over Labor Day weekend.

Art and Spirituality Podcast Series

I (Rachael) am doing a new series on When Narratives Collide Podcast, called Art and Spirituality that will release this Fall. It will look at the intersection of Art and Faith, and why it is so important to us today. My wonderful friend, Cari Dougan and I will have several conversations about the impact of art on faith through history, culture’s impact on art, along with several conversations with artists around this subject.

I am also teaching the book of Daniel this fall in Atlanta, GA. And am looking forward to engaging an incredible community as we journey through the story of Daniel.

With all of the transitions that our family experienced and due to financial considerations and other commitments, we felt it best to hit the pause button on Rachael’s journey of earning her Master of Divinity degree. She is hoping to continue taking classes this fall through Fuller Theological Seminary now that we have transitioned to a more consistent schedule. We believe that this degree will serve our larger dreams of The Refuge. Please consider partnering with us in this dream.

MICRO SHIFT FOUR, BUSINESS

I (Rachael) am doing my own contract work and just recently started my own business called Tritonia Consulting. I specialize in helping startup businesses and entrepreneurs look at their marketing strategy, specializing in the podcast industry for hosts and guests. I love serving the story of people and what they are passionate about.

Micro Shifts to Foward Movement

Many times in life we want to see progress and we want to see it instantly. Our desire for instant results or gratification get played out in all areas of our life. Realistically though anything that is good and worth something takes time to cultivate and develop; relationships, family, work, ministry. The best we can do is continue to make micro shifts that as we keep living, move us toward our greater goals in life. And for us that means to love intentionally in a way that makes people feel seen and known.

Partnering with The Frases

We would love for you to join us on this journey of following Jesus together. While there are a variety of ways that we can remain connected, one of the primary ways is by praying for you and having you pray for us. Please visit the link below to partner with us in this way.

To partner with us financially, please visit Donations on our Website to give towards our ministry and Rachael’s continuing education as we walk forward.

The Refuge: Looking Forward

Our Mission

We desire to be a refuge to the broken, the weary, and fellow sojourners as we follow Jesus and reflect his message of forgiveness, hope, wholeness, restoration and rest in a broken and weary world.

The Frase Five have had a full year adding Dietrich, our fluffy puppy to the mix. Declan aka Duck keeps us on our toes and is currently obsessed with Spider Man, Wes started kindergarten and wants to be a director and scientist all inspired by Pokemon, and Emma is in 3rd grade and playing the piano and writing songs.

SHORT TERM GOALS

With the season that we are in as a family, the reality is that we are taking baby steps towards the ministry that we feel called to. So, what does this practically look like? Relaunching the When Narratives Collide podcast in 2022. Writing Thursday’s Thoughts, a new part of our website. Rachael continuing to work on her Masters Degree. Becoming rooted in a local church. Hosting and facilitating small group gatherings to fellowship, converse, pray, and encourage each other, both in person and virtually.

Finally, we hope to purchase a home in the Lancaster area. We feel called to become rooted in this place and trust God in that process, and trust his leading, along the path He has called us upon.

LONG TERM GOALS

Our hope is to one day found a 501(c)(3) non-profit ministry named The Refuge, which would be a physical location, serving as a place of safety, rest, and provision for Christians and non-Christian sojourners, where needs my be met, and people may be cared for and prepared for their journey. The Refuge will be a place where hospitality and compassion are extended, and the gospel proclaimed and lived out. It will be a place where the stranger and the friend are welcomed equally and unconditionally. It is our ultimate desire that our lives and The Refuge will point people to Jesus, who is our only hope and the true refuge in this world. Christ alone offers the forgiveness, rest and home that our hearts desire.

Where Are They Now?

Hi folks! It has been a while since our last update and we wanted to keep you in the loop with what is going on in our lives.

A little over a year ago we set out from our community in Massachusetts and only now are we starting to feel as though our feet are back on solid ground and we are regaining traction as we continue this journey on the path that Jesus is leading us on. Do you ever feel that you find yourself in the dark as you follow Jesus, or even maybe that your compass is broken? Honestly that is how we have felt over this last year. The way that I have described it to people is the scene from J.R.R. Tolkien’s magisterial work The Fellowship of the Ring in which at the council of Elrond, Frodo Baggins volunteers to take the one ring to where it was forged, to the one place where the evil it has wrought upon Middle Earth can finally be undone, the fires of Mount Doom. Frodo bravely and humbly raises “his small voice,” saying “I will take the ring, though I do not know the way.”

In the clarion call to follow Christ, those who respond are called to set out on a journey with the ultimate destination any sojourner or adventurer can hope for, a journey which transcends all journeys and adventures which have been embarked upon throughout the course of history. The Way has been revealed to humanity and especially to those who see with the eyes of faith, in the person of Jesus Christ, who is the very embodiment of the Way, the Truth and the Life. At times, although the path seems riddled with obstacles and unforeseen detours, Christ is constantly present to guide us along the way, especially through the valleys, and in that we take immense comfort. Like Frodo, sometimes we are not certain of the way, but it is the call of Christ to place one foot in front of the other and place our trust and hope in him as he leads us to the place our hearts desperately long for.

So, for the Frase family, this is where we find ourselves, taking one step at a time. Scott had been working for a landscaping company since November, but recently left that company as Rachael was offered a fully remote position with a consulting company that helps businesses and individuals grow and spread their messages. After evaluating this current season of our life and ministry, we believe that making this change was the right fit for our family. Scott is now at home, investing into lives of our kids and supporting Rachael in her new role (which she has already been incredibly successful in). This change will also enable us to engage in more consistent communication with all of you as we share what God is teaching us on this journey.

Rach is no longer formally teaching in Bible Studies because of churches being fully open this fall. She invested many years and much time into the lives of the women that she was able to minister to and although that formal relationship has come to an end, she still has been able to maintain these relationships on an individual basis. I (Scott) am always amazed at Rachael and the reciprocity of friendship that was cultivated with the women of these Bible Studies. I think that they may truly be Rachael’s biggest fans. While Rachael is working full-time, she is also continuing to earn her Master of Divinity Degree. If you would like to give towards this season of training in our ministry click here.

Scott is enjoying being home with the kids and walking with them to and from their school and spending his days with Declan. He is also looking forward to having the opportunity to write and post more frequently on our website and cultivate the ministry relationships that we have formed over the years. Stay tuned for more frequent posts!

Emma has entered 3rd grade is thriving at school once again. She has also been taking piano lessons and is becoming a voracious reader and is such a deep thinker and feeler who loves people so well.

IMG_4289.jpeg

Wesley has entered Kindergarten and has also started playing T-ball. We are so proud of who he is and seeing his heart for others. The feedback that we received from his teacher from the first week of school was that he quickly befriended and was so helpful to another boy in his class who has a broken leg.

Declan, well he keeps us on our toes, that’s for sure. He and Dietrich are fast friends and I’m not quite sure who tires whom out first, but they have a tendency to collapse on to each other at the same time. On the way home from dropping Em and Wes off at school one morning, Duck asked if we could go to Fox Meadows Creamery for ice cream. It was 7:55am. He is certainly his father’s son.

So, this is where we find ourselves currently. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your friendship and encouragement along the way. We are grateful for you and taking the time to read our updates, listen to our podcasts (which we hope to resume in the near future). We are working on some new ways to minister remotely to any who are interested, e.g. Bible studies, hearing your voices and thoughts as we all navigate contemporary issues and our faith.

We would love to hear from anyone who wishes to contact us which you can do by clicking on the contact link on our website. To learn more about how you can partner with us on this journey and how we can partner with you in prayer and financially, please feel free to reach out to us or click here. Until next time, it is our prayer that you would know the presence, comfort, and guidance of Christ in the season of the path that we find ourselves on as we follow Jesus to the rest and community to which we are called, and that through our lives and conduct, we would point other sojourners to Christ and accompany them along the Way.

Loss and Hope

Loss and Hope

No one ever told me that grief felt so like fear
— C.S. Lewis

It’s been awhile time since we have written and updated many of you about our general reality of life and our ministry. This was an unconscious decision in some ways to take time to process but we quickly realized that it was also about giving ourselves room to mourn and grieve a season of loss. We have been processing the transition from Massachusetts to Pennsylvania as well as the loss of Rachael’s grandmother, Peggy, and Scott’s Uncle Russ. We have even been processing a loss of vision for ministry. So our updates stopped and there has been radio silence on our end even with social media for several months. For many of us, this past year has been a deep well of pain and loss and for me and I believe many others it has brought out fear that has produced anxiety. Always in our peripheral was this fear that made our steps forward feel leaden. What we did not foresee was that in this silence an ember of hope remained in our hearts. In this time of silence we have started to dream again. Small conversations that Scott and I have had together and with friends about our dreams is fanning that ember of hope into a roaring fire. Silence and community have begun to bring healing but has also given us room to feel whatever we feel. May we all hold room for our grief and for others and may nurture one another towards the hope that still remains. As Emma has been processing through the same things, she wrote a poem that articulated the pain that we have experienced, but also lifted our heads to where our help truly come from:

“It is the worst day of my life.

Since people have died it has broke my heart.

Inside it feels like I’m alone and no one can see me.

Inside my heart and I’m alone.

But good thing God is here to guide me.”

Emma

Embers of Hope

I’m not sure we are fully ready to dive into all our hopes for the future yet. We are getting there so you can expect some dreams to start to surface in the months to come and how you can be apart of this new journey. What I can tell you is that I, Rachael, will be resuming the pursuit of earning my Master of Divinity Degree through Fuller Theological Seminary this spring. Emma has returned to school, which is within walking distance of our home, and we are so grateful that she is thriving! Wesley is our little ninja and has more energy than we know what to do with. Declan is growing in leaps and bounds, and his vocabulary is growing exponentially, when he chooses to speak. Scott continues to work with a landscaping company and is grateful that spring is on the horizon. These are our glimpses of hope, friends.

If you would like to partner with us in this dream please click the donate link below or visit our website.

A Voice to Our Stories

Many of you have asked why the Podcast suddenly stopped. I needed the room to be and not produce anything as I processed and grieved, this is the short answer. However, it has also brought about a lot of ideas and I am excited to relaunch the Podcast with a brand new series coming this April!!!! Keep your eyes open for another email about this upcoming series. GET READY FOR IT!

Also feel free to catch up on our last series Women in the Old Testament! You can find When Narratives Collide on Apple and Spotify. You can also listen on our website just click the link below.

End of the Year Update

Hi everyone! We hope this finds you well as we enter the Christmas season and specifically the Advent season as we gratefully remember and reflect upon the birth of Jesus Christ as we also look with eager anticipation to his second coming when he will make all things new.

This seems like a strange update to write because like the character Walter Mitty in the movie The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, as of late, it feels like we haven’t “done anything noteworthy or mentionable.” Scott has been unemployed from August through the middle of November, Rach has had to step away from pursuing the dream of earning a Master of Divinity degree, we have been living in someone’s basement, and we all miss our community  in Massachusetts. Life has not been easy for a while, but we remain grateful for each other and the gift of God’s continual presence in our lives and for the people and places that have become part of our narrative and in a broader sense, God’s narrative. We entrust our lives, ambitions, and plans to our Good Shepherd who is ever faithful to guide and care for us.

At the end of July we moved to Pennsylvania from Massachusetts. Our living situation in Massachusetts changed quickly and unexpectedly and this compounded with a host of factors, including the high cost of living in Massachusetts and Covid, became the catalyst for us deciding to move to Pennsylvania to be closer to Rachael’s family. Rachael’s sister and brother-in-law and their son have generously opened their home to us since August. We are excited to move December 15 into our new rental closer to Scott’s work.

This has been a season of reorienting and recalibrating for so many of us. We see and know the difficult road this has been. Although we do not claim to know your story this season has given us greater compassion into so many untold hardships.

During this time, Rachael started the podcast, When Narratives Collide, where she discusses the intersection of the narrative of Scripture and God and the Christian faith with our own personal stories. Additionally, she has been remotely teaching in a women’s Bible study for a church in Massachusetts. Rachael had been pursuing a Master of Divinity degree through Fuller Theological Seminary, but has been on a hiatus from that since we moved. She will resume taking classes this winter.

Scott has been busy building an addition onto our extended family’s house. He recently was able to remotely teach in a Sunday School class for our church in Massachusetts. He was also recently hired by a great landscaping company as a manager to help oversee landscape maintenance, excavation, and snow removal operations. Hope has been a strong anchor in this place of waiting.

Emma is doing well. We made the decision to homeschool her because our school district in PA is still fully remote and she was struggling with being in front of the computer screen all day. It has been a good decision and has helped her immensely. Although she often expresses a longing for her friends and school in Massachusetts, she is happy to be with her cousins. We have learned a lot about our yearning for permanence and roots through this little girl.

Wesley is loving being near his cousins and is always asking to spend time with them. As I have been working on the addition he has pitched in with a few things, such as learning how to properly and safely use a handsaw. He is a great helper and quick learner. It’s hard to believe that he will be 5 at the end of the month.

Declan just turned 2 and has been keeping on us on our toes, pretty much since he was born. He has the sweetest disposition, as long as you keep him fed and on a steady supply of whole milk. He can quickly ascend ladders if your back is turned even for a second. He always  brightens up the day with his personality and smile.

So, there you have it. The current phase of the journey of the Frase five. It’s not too terribly exciting or inspiring (with the exception of Rach’s podcast) but it's real and ordinary and good because God is in the midst of it. With that being said, we pray that throughout this Christmas season, you will have a renewed sense of awe and joy of the reality of God clothing himself in humanity in the person of Jesus Christ to save us from our sins and lead us to our true home, dwelling fully in the presence of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit and enjoying unbroken fellowship with God and his people.

All our Love,

The Frase Five (Scott, Rachael, Emma, Wesley, Declan)

The Journey Shifts Directions

roots-1.jpg

This Journey of Life

is not always what we anticipate and although these next steps have been unexpected, hope beckons us forward.

The Kingdom is coming, but the Kingdom is here. That’s why we’re homesick, and it’s also why we might as well get busy planting.
— Andrew Peterson, Adorning the Dark

WHERE ARE WE MOVING?

We are moving to Pennsylvania!

WHY ARE WE MOVING?

The catalyst for this move was our housing situation however it has become about finding more than just a house but a community and home where we can fully put roots and invest as a family. We want a home where peace resides and also invites people in.

WHEN ARE WE GOING?

This is a quick transition for our family. We are moving at the end of July. It is bittersweet to say goodbye to our church family and this beautiful place and community. It is where we had our boys, where Emma started school, and where Scott and I fell in love with the local church. It is here that we were allowed to dream.

WHAT WILL WE DO THERE?

Rachael will continue working towards her Masters of Divinity and will be teaching Bible classes online and starting a Podcast this August. Scott is currently looking for a new job. This transition has happened so quickly we would appreciate your prayers directionally as we move forward.

WHAT HAS NOT CHANGED?

Our heart and desire is still to be in ministry. The where is changing but not the what for our family. We still feel called to serve the Lord and his church, both locally and globally through Biblical and theological education, discipleship, pastoral care, and the development and multiplication of servant leaders.

A New Podcast

ED5B8504-BE0A-4D93-9ADB-3D7D087A0959.jpeg

STARTING THIS AUGUST

Origin of the Podcast:

This podcast was born through encountering a felt need for reading and understanding the overarching story of Scripture and exploring the intersection of Christian faith with our personal and collective experiences as sojourners in this world. Sometimes the content of the Bible may seem disconnected from our lives and even confusing or outdated at times. By taking the time to rethink how we approach the Bible and about God’s work in our lives through the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, I think that we will discover together that God’s story and our story converge in a greater way than we could ever imagine. My husband and I have served in the contexts of missions and the local church and sense that we are called to serve the Lord and his church, both locally and globally through Biblical and theological education, discipleship, pastoral care, and the development and multiplication of servant leaders. It is my hope that this podcast will serve the church to that end.

FIRST SERIES

The Equal Significance and Brokenness of Women in God’s Redemptive Plan

What our society has heard within the framework of the Bible narrative is about the creation of man, the raising up of the Patriarchs that give birth to the 12 tribes that eventually form the foundation of Israel. We hear the stories of Moses leading Israel out of bondage and Joshua leading the conquest of the land and all the male judges who delivered Israel in the dark days of disobedience before the kingship of Saul, David, and Solomon. Many of us think of the nation of Israel in its united and divided form in the context of its male leaders. The prophets who were God’s spokesman and His warning voice to Israel through the exile and their return. What is void in the many retellings of Israel’s history and God’s plan of redemption culminating in the coming of Christ, is the women.

We often forget about Adam’s counterpart of Eve who God uses the description of helpmate a word that is used to describe God himself when interacting with Israel. We forget about the mother’s of the Patriarch’s Sarah, Rebeccah, Leah and Rachel. What about the equivalent to Moses in leadership, Miriam and Aaron. The story of Rahab whose faith became the gateway to the conquest and in many ways is seen as Joshua’s counterpart in the conquest narrative. Or the judgeship of Deborah and the heroics of Jael as they were apart of God’s narrative of deliverance. Don’t forget about Ruth a Moabite women who is the great grandmother of David and plays a central role in the validity of David’s kingship. Or the wives of David who were integral in his story. The label “prophetess” or “woman prophet” (něbī’āh) is attributed to five women in the Old Testament: Miriam (Exod. 15:20), Deborah (Judg. 4:4), Huldah (2 Kings 22:14; 2 Chron. 34:22), Noadiah (Neh. 6:14), and “the prophetess” (Isa. 8:3). God spoke through women as well to bring them back to his law. Often Esther and her role in the saving of God’s people is forgotten among Israel’s history.

These women’s stories are equal in their brokenness partaking in God’s grace in mercy as he moves humanity towards the culminating reality of his redemption through Christ. Yet in their brokenness that is equal to Israel’s men we see a faith that saves and moves this nation towards God’s promises.

True Knowledge

New Series on Johannine Epistles

The Johannine epistles are said to be written by the man who called himself “Beloved of Jesus”. He wrote three letters to the church of Ephesus reminding them of their call to abide, walk, and participate in God’s truth and love and of their mission to the world; even in the midst of those who oppose the truth of Jesus as the Messiah and the Son of God.

Meditation on Ruth

I was asked to write a meditation for our beautiful church and after studying Ruth for the past month here is what I have been ruminating over.

Ruth 1:20-21a
“Don’t call me Naomi,” she told them. “Call me Mara, because the Almighty has made my life very bitter. I went away full, but the Lord has brought me back empty...”

Meditation: Hope Moving Forward

You may be asking, “why would you pick such a depressing passage” or maybe this passage feels a little close to home and you are now contemplating a name change. Mara is now going to be 2020’s most popular name.

Naomi’s life has been emptied, she has endured famine, loss, and feels as though her entire identity is now marked by her feelings of bitterness and worse yet that it is God’s hand who has done this to her. This story does not rush Naomi out of what she feels nor does it try to make her feel better with platitudes or even try to tell her that what she feels is wrong. Rather, it is in the unfolding of the story that she is given eyes to see. The Lord gently awakens her to a different reality. Not a reality where her loss is less or her feelings are diminished but rather coexisting with these feelings and hope. Hope slowly and imperceptibly changes Naomi’s ability to see the people in her life and eventually to see how God is going to redeem.

A German poet, Rainer Maria Rilke talks about grief and said, “Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror. Just keep going. No feeling is final.”

Grief and bitterness are not unchristian. We are allowed and free to feel grief and even bitterness. Naomi’s feelings were not final and they will not be final for us. Hope allowed her to keep moving forward to eventually have eyes to see a God that redeems and gives hope. May our eyes be open to hope this day.

Prayer

Thank you for the freedom to acknowledge all that we feel, that we can cry out in rage or pain and you are not surprised or dismayed. Yet, we know we have a hope that coexists beside our feelings and allows us to move forward. Thank you that in the midst of our feelings you are still God and are still redeeming our stories.

A Little Story that Echoes into History

Barren to Full

How Naomi’s Empty Hands are Filled.

“In the dark days of the judges the foundation is laid for the line that would produce the Savior, the Messiah, the Redeemer of a lost and destitute humanity.”
— Daniel Block

Redemption is not seen in this story through heroic exploits or even grand miracles of the judges who deliver Israel from a physical oppressor. rather, in the dark days of disobedience during the time of Judges we see that it is God’s hand who saves and rewards the faithfulness and kindness of individuals in Ruth’s narrative. The hesed kindness of Boaz, Ruth, and Naomi lay the foundation for the history of salvation that will extend beyond the borders of Geography and time itself and give voice to hope.

How do we see our stories echoing into history?

Virtual Series Through Ruth

Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness
— Desmond Tutu

Join us as we traverse through a seemingly ordinary story in a time of loss, grief and bitterness and uncover a the reality of an extraordinary God. The story of Ruth happened during one of the darkest periods of Israel’s history and yet it is in this story that hope sparks a light that shines brightly, redeeming more than just a families story but the entire nation of Israel and bringing us an even greater redeemer in Christ.

The Longest Month of the Year Did Not Disappoint

My feelings toward January are most accurately captured by James Hall when he depicted January in this caricature.

C3g_h8lWIAAZqhM.jpeg

What the Longest Month of the Year held for the Frases

Scott: It has been an unseasonably warm winter season thus far affording us with fewer overtime hours of plowing, so far making it possible for Scott to be more present at home in the evening. Something we all love! Not that Scott has stayed idle as he is preparing to teach a class on  "Everything’s Not Awesome, But That Doesn’t Mean It’s Hopeless and Bleak," A 16 week journey through Jeremiah and Lamentations for Sunday School.

Rachael: I am over half way done with this quarter. I am taking The Practices of Worship and The Practices of Interpretation online. I am continuing to teach 2 classes for a local congregation on Judges and Ruth. I will also be helping to facilitate and teach a class during Sunday school for 16 weeks on “Empowering Kids to Challenge Cultural Lies.” I am also working on starting treatment again for my migraines after a break from treatment during my pregnancy and nursing Declan. Please pray that our insurance would cover everything.

Emma: It has been more difficult getting back into the routine of school after our wonderful Christmas break together. She continues to thrive in an environment where she has the freedom to color and create. Her new obsession is the Lego Movie. She is already planning her 7th birthday party at the end of March with that theme in mind! Please keep praying for provision for her Occupational Therapy.

Wesley: He is our puzzle master and little ninja. He teaches his little brother all the bad tricks of climbing on everything imaginable. He and his brother are my (Rachael’s) shadow as I go and teach each week and he is complete joy to talk to on our long drive to the church together each week.

Declan (aka Duck): This has been a full month as he had his one year check up and had grown 4 inches in 3 months. He is almost as tall as Wesley! He is clever and sweet and a total delight and keeps us on our toes with his love of climbing. We have also discovered that he absolutely loves music, just like his dad.

LOOKING AHEAD TO 2020

THE HOPE OF THE NEW YEAR

Scott and I are humbled to walk the journey of ministry that we have been blessed to traverse. It has not always looked the way we have anticipated with many stops and detours along the way. However as we reflect upon the last year of unanticipated blessings and hardships, we see God’s enduring grace that continues to lead us forward. We know that the year ahead is full of unanticipated detours, and possible roadblocks again; however our hope is that as we continue to put one foot in front of the other in this season of training that the road ahead will become more clear. Will you pray for us as we continue to balance this season of training through school, working and ministry while also looking to the future of what God is calling our family too? We are beyond blessed to have community to walk with us.

There is something about a new year that instills hope. Maybe it feels like closure to the pain and challenges of the past year. Possibly it feels like progress toward the better, healing of the brokenness that was endured. Change is never easy it often equates with loss before we see what is gained. So as we close the door to 2019 may we be still and acknowledge the loss and gain of the past year so that we may look forward in eager anticipation to the road ahead in 2020.

STARTING THE YEAR STRONGISH

I say the word strongish because what I anticipate is never the reality. I often start the year off overloading our schedules in an endeavor to get all that I need done. I am not saying this is changing the reality is our lives are very full with kids, ministry, school and work. That reality is not going to change. However, Scott and I are endeavoring to see the year ahead a little different. Instead of resolutions we hope to do a Rule of Life. See the link below to read about what this is.

Our goal for the year is to live a life that is more fully integrated. That in the midst of a busy schedule we allow for the space to see all that God is doing and room to respond to Him.

2020 Agenda for Scott and Rachael

Scott has been asked to step onto the Missions Board at our church and is excited to be a voice for missions in the local context. He is also teaching a Sunday School class on Jeremiah and Lamentations early Spring. He continues to teach with a team from our church at the Lifebridge a Homeless Shelter and works at Gordon Conwell Seminary as the grounds foreman. Pray that God would continue to clarify the road ahead as he walks in faith and obedience forward.

I (Rachael) will start two classes January 6th called Interpretive Practices and Practices of Worship. I am so grateful to be in this season of school. I will also continue to teach Judges on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning. I will start teaching Ruth early this Spring. I also will teach the book of Jude in the middle of January. It is my honor and joy to be a part of these communities that truly engage God’s word and desire not just information but transformation. Read below to see the format for how we engage in our study with the inductive study.

Scott and I are also continuing to lead a small group at our church, which we love! We have found such rich friendship and community in these people.

Pray for us as we navigate these roles that we have been given in ministry and life while balancing what it means and looks like in our marriage and family.

THE KIDDOS: Emma, Wesley and Declan

These three are our greatest joys. Scott has a nightly routine of what the kids call, “fight club.” Which essentially means Scott puts on music and wrestles with them until they are tired and laughing. The kids wait all day for this small nightly routine.

We are hoping to get Emma and Wesley in Karate again this winter. It is a good activity to support Emma in her Occupational Therapy growth. Here are two videos of them completing last semesters classes.

Declan also started to walk right before the year is ending!

Steps of Faith

A Home of Hospitality

The entirety of our marriage Scott and I have lived in everything from a motel room at a missions campus, an apartment, a room at our parents house for a season, and now in a small apartment on the campus of a seminary with three small children. Walking in faith when you are called into the vocation of ministry is not always easy especially as you walk the road of obedience to where God calls you. We have always been blessed and all our needs have been more than met but in the last few years our heart have started to yearn for a larger place for our family of 5 and that our home would be able to be a place of hospitality and ministry. On October 1st we get to move into the first house we will have ever rented as a family! Our kids have never had a backyard, we have never had more than one bathroom and I can’t even remember how to use a dishwasher or what a garage is! This is a big step of faith for us as we have considered all the financial obligations as our costs of living will double. We have asked for prayer and counsel and have felt like we are to make this move knowing that God wants this next season to be a place where our home is also a place we can minister to others, including our own kids. Thank you for praying with us for this need! Please continue to pray for financial provision for this place of ministry!

Packing up

These are just a few of our boxes of books! Seminary has done wonders for our book addiction. We have been so blessed to live in this apartment and bring two of our kids home from the hospital here.

Women’s Day of Discovery Conference

I (Rachael) am so honored to be one of the speakers at this years annual Womens conference at our church. The topic this year will be “God’s Transforming Love.” Here is a small video summarizing some of what I will be talking about on September 28th! There will be three sessions. I will be speaking at Session One: Our Action Generated by His Action.
Lisa Larson will be speaking at Session Two on Love Conquers Fear and Jeanine Birdsall will be speaking at Session Three on Freed to Love. Come join us for a special day as we discover God's amazing love for us and how it transforms our lives. Please pray for me and the women that God would prepare our hearts as we meet together as God’s body.

School and Faith

This next week seems like a long awaited dream as I have wanted to return back to school for ten years now. And as the days draw nearer, so does my anxiety! How am I going to do this with three small children? Am I going to be able to balance family, ministry and school? Some days I can’t even remember my own children’s names how am I going to write coherent papers? How are we going to pay for school? And then I stop and remember, faith. God calls us to the hard and challenging but he doesn’t call us there alone. He calls us forth into His good promises and He walks beside us on the journey. Thank you for walking with our family as we continue to walk the road of faith and ministry. We are so honored to have people on this journey with us!

Our month of September in a few pictures

New Starts

New Adventures

Our family took an impromptu trip to Six Flags before the fall routine started again. As Emma said it was “the most magical day in the whole universe.” We really saw certain aspects of our kids personality come out. Emma was brave and adventurous, wanting to ride by herself and on every big ride she could! Her joy was infectious! Wesley however thought the carousel was a bit intimidating. He took his time getting warmed up to his environment then he found his love, Convoy Trucks. The semi-trucks that go around in a circle. It was perfect and then all three of them fell asleep within 5 minutes of getting in the car. All in all a perfect day!

Don’t let their little faces fool you, they loved every second of it, besides me making them take this picture.

Starting First Grade

Emma is officially a first grader! We are so proud of this little girl. She also rode the bus for the first time. I walked her to the bus stop and promptly within a few minutes she said I could go across the street and that she was fine. She is independent. She also is having a little bit of “FOMO” aka “Fear of Missing Out.” Some mornings she doesn’t want to go because she thinks we are going to have more fun at home and she doesn’t want to miss out. She is our extreme extrovert that also has a very sensitive heart.

She was very excited that she looked like a “car worker” aka mechanic

Rachael Starts Graduate School

I just registered for my two classes for this fall, Orientation to Theological Studies and Practices of Vocational Formations. I am so excited to start this season of training for future ministry! I’ve received a scholarship for my missions experience which has reduced my tuition costs. Even with this reduction I will still owe $2000 for the fall semester, which is due in two weeks. If you would like to give a tax-deductible donation towards these costs please feel free click the link below. Thank you for walking with our family in this season training!

Summer Update

A Long Obedience in the Same Direction

Eugene Peterson wrote a book on the topic of Discipleship called A Long Obedience in the Same Direction. As we reflect upon this season of training and the call to follow Christ this is often the phrase that comes to mind. This season of preparation for future ministry often feels long at times but we know that it is in the small steps of obedience and faithfulness that we discover what it means to follow Jesus. Thank you for walking this long road of with us! Scott has earned his M.A. in Theology and M.A. in Old Testament and now Rachael will pursue a Master of Divinity degree through Fuller Theological Seminary in September.. We are not done and we still value your partnership on this journey and in the ministry that God has called us to.

Prayer:

  • We need larger living quarters. We are currently living on Campus at the seminary in a two bedroom apartment. We would love to have a larger place for our family of five that can serve as a place of rest and hospitality.

  • Finances for Rachael to complete her degree. We were fortunate and blessed for Scott to finish his degree without debt and we would love to return to ministry unencumbered by such burdens. Thank you to everyone who has given already to make this possible!

  • Clarity for what this next season of life looks like as we continue to serve the church and also are still in a season of training.
